Denver’s Location & the Front Range

Welcome to Denver, CO – the Gateway to the Rocky Mountains! But is Denver in the Rocky Mountains? Technically, Denver sits just east of the mountains in the Front Range Urban Corridor, often called the “foothills” of the Rockies. While it’s not in the high mountains themselves, it offers unmatched access to some of the most beautiful and dramatic scenery in North America.

These impressive mountains form the highest portion of the Rocky Mountain chain, which begins in northern British Columbia, Canada, and stretches south through Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, Colorado, Utah, Arizona, and into southern New Mexico. Colorado alone is home to 78 of the 100 tallest peaks, including the 30 highest in the range. The Southern Rockies include eight sub-ranges, and our journey begins in the most accessible of them all: the Front Range.

1. Denver’s Rocky Mountain Region Explained

The Front Range is more than just home to cities like Denver, Colorado Springs, and Boulder. Geographically, it starts far north in Casper, Wyoming, and stretches south past Pueblo, Colorado. To the west, it reaches the Eastern Slope of the Continental Divide, a major hydrological divide that begins in Alaska and travels all the way to South America. For anyone visiting the Rockies, the Continental Divide is a must-see.

One of the most breathtaking views of the Continental Divide is from Loveland Pass, just 60 miles west of Denver. During summer, the wildflowers bloom across the slopes, creating ideal conditions for panoramic photography and enjoying the alpine air.

2. Fourteeners Within Reach

Summit County, Colorado’s outdoor playground, is easily reached by driving west over Loveland Pass. There, hikers of all skill levels can tackle three iconic “fourteeners” (peaks over 14,000 feet):

These mountains are:

  • Distance from Denver: ~70–85 miles

  • Drive time: 1.5 to 2 hours

  • Activities: Hiking, photography, wildlife spotting

  • Shuttle options: Private hiking tours or seasonal shuttles available from Denver

Looking for a slightly less daunting climb? Mount of the Holy Cross, located near Red Cliff outside of Vail, tops out at 14,007 feet. Though its elevation is “lower,” the trail is no joke:

  • Distance: 11.7 miles round trip

  • Estimated time: 9–10 hours

  • Trailhead location: 2.5 hours west of Denver

For beginners, the San Juan Range in southern Colorado offers a gentler introduction. Handies Peak has only a 2,500’ elevation gain over 5.5 miles, with unforgettable views to reward the climb.
