Things To Do in Breckenridge This Winter

Breckenridge, Colorado is typically a place people visit to get in some world class skiing and snowboarding. The high country is known for its incredible slopes, and very winter people flock to this quaint mountain town to enjoy some fresh powder.  Don’t think the only thing Breckenridge has to offer is amazing skiing – it houses an abundance of outdoor activities, great cuisine, shopping, and plenty of festivities all season long. Check out these incredible events to add some excitement to your vacation.

Events

Dew Tour

In December, Breckenridge is host to the annual Dew Tour. This is a great time to view some of the best of the best in their element.  Professional skiers and snowboarders come out to play and show off their skills for three days: December 14th through the 17th. As an Olympic qualifying event, riders bring their A-game in hopes to advance. Prepare yourself to see some of the craziest ski tricks in the world.

Ullr Fest

Ullr Fest takes place January 7th to the 12th. If you’ve never heard of Ullr Fest, you’re missing out. Ullr (the Norse god of snow and all things cold) is celebrated far and wide in this snowy town. Locals go all out with floats and a parade – including some of the most extravagant costumes. The celebration includes a fat tire race and a polar plunge. If you’re not feeling brave enough to take part yourself, just revel in the locals acting ridiculous.  Ullr brings all the good powder to town, so this is what we live for. Definitely don’t miss the shot ski which Breckenridge has held the record for. From our understanding, the record has been broken… so it’s on this year!

Breckenridge International Snow Sculpture Championships

We can’t forget one of the greatest art displays in the country. At the International Snow Sculpture Championships, sculptors come from all of the world to build their beautiful creations. They stand for about a week, offering you the chance to admire the masterpieces and vote on which you like the most. A victor is crowned for different categories based on your votes and they reign supreme until the next year’s festival. January 22nd through the 26th, the artists take to the ice for the creating process, and the following week, January 25th through the 29th, is when they are fully available for viewing.

Mardis Gras Celebration

February events start mid-month with the annual Mardi Gras Celebration. Prepare to dress up yourself or just ogle at those who are. Breckenridge’s local businesses go all out for the parade, making homemade floats for everyone’s enjoyment. The fun ends with the lowdown Brass Band playing at Riverwalk Center in the evening.

Shopping

Breckenridge’s Main Street is littered with all types of shopping, from tourists items such as Colorado mugs and t-shirts galore, to jewelry and fossil shops.  There’s even a Christmas store that is open year round with a plethora of ornaments.  Take an afternoon stroll down Main and scavenge around for some goodies to remember your stay in Breckenridge!
