First of all, great choice to make your end destination Frisco, Colorado.  Located in the heart of Summit County within minutes of Breckenridge, Keystone, and Copper Mountain areas, Frisco is a beautiful mountain town without as much madness. Nestled in between the Tenmile and Gore mountain ranges with the Dillon Reservoir as it’s backyard, Frisco is a perfect starting point to exploring the outdoors.  Hiking, biking, rock climbing, boating, fishing, or just grabbing a beer and exploring Main Street, the town of Frisco has what you are looking for.  Since the list of activities and events in Frisco is nearly endless, we’ll just cover a few of our favorite outdoor excursions.

Hiking in Frisco

Mt. Royal

There are some great hikes in the general vicinity of Frisco, but you can’t talk about the area without talking about Mt. Royal. It’s the northern most point of the Tenmile range and towers above the town at 10,502 feet in elevation. The trail up Royal is short, but it’s not easy. You’ll climb 1,588 ft in just 2 miles on your way to the top. Try not to stare at your boots the whole time, because the views along the trail are spectacular. From the top you will be rewarded with a fantastic view of Frisco, the Dillon Reservoir, Keystone Ski Resort, and all the surrounding mountain vistas. The ambitious can push on higher to reach Mt Victoria (11,600 ft) or even Peak 1 (12,805 ft). These are more challenging hikes that you should only attempt if you are confident in your physical fitness. Serious rock climbers will want to look into the multi-pitch climbing routes on the west-facing side of Royal.

North Tenmile Trail

Looking to take it a little easier? The North Tenmile Trail is another local favorite. Starting at the very northern end of Main Street. North Tenmile is a 3.2 mile out and back trail that only gains 899ft along the way. The small elevation gain doesn‘t mean you won’t get awesome mountain views, you’ll be walking in a forested meadow along the Tenmile Creek with 12,000ft peaks looming in the distance. Wildlife sightings of moose, elk, and porcupines are common on this trail.

Bike Around Summit County

Getting tired of all this walking? Maybe a bike ride is more your speed. Head over to Rebel Sports on Main to rent a bike for the day. From Rebel Sports, ride down towards the marina and link up with the Summit County Recreation path for a mellow ride around Dillon Reservoir. The Rec path circles the whole reservoir and connects the towns of Frisco, Dillon, Silverthorne, Breckenridge, and Vail. Yes, you could ride your bike all the way to Vail! The climb over Vail Pass is hard, but the ride down is sweet. If you don’t want to do the ride up, Rebel Sports can shuttle you and your bike up the pass and you can just cruise down. If you are looking for a trail ride, the Peaks Trail is an awesome single track with a good mix of climbs and downhills. The trail goes 9 miles all the way to Breckenridge with views of the Ten Mile range along the way.

Our Favorite Lunch Spot

If you make it the whole way, you’ll probably be ready for lunch. A meatball sub from Duggan’s Deli located just off Ski Hill Road in Breckenridge will satisfy your hunger.  After lunch you can either ride the trail back, or take it easy, and stick to the Rec path to get back to Frisco.

Fishing in Summit County

Looking for good fishing? With 26 miles of shoreline it should be easy to find a nice spot to cast a line on the Dillon Reservoir. If you want to get out on the water, the Frisco Marina does boat rentals by the hour. For fly fishing, the Blue River is a Gold Medal rated river just minutes from Frisco.  The river runs right along Highway 9, making it easy to enjoy world class trout fishing just a few steps from your car door. You can also stop into Trouts Fly Fishing on Main to hire a fly fishing guide for the day.
