Denver International Airport Travel Tips

Navigating DIA

In general, we recommend allowing 90 minutes to make it to your gate at Denver International Airport, more if you are catching an international flight. Below are some tips and tricks to make your travel experience as smooth as possible.

Passenger Pick-Up:
Tickets and Checked Baggage:
Security:
Concourses:
Baggage Claim:

To find Passenger Pick-up, take the escalators or elevators from baggage claim to the Passenger Pick-up floor.

To find your Peak 1 Express shuttle, use exit 513 on the east side of the main terminal. Your shuttle will be located at Island 1, beneath the sign labeled Mountain Carriers.

If you print your ticket prior to arriving at the airport, you may simply walk in through either the east or west side of the terminal and head straight to security.  This will cut down on the time it takes to navigate DEN. If you forget your ticket, you may always locate the easy to use kiosks that usually sit near the designated carrier.

If you are traveling with a few bags, you will want to check which side of the terminal your airline’s check-in desk is located on.  It is always highly recommended to plan for additional travel time if you do plan to have checked baggage, and to allow for more time if you have a large group with multiple bags.

Denver International Airport provides estimated security checkpoint times on their website, but it never hurts to allow a little extra time. Here are a few helpful things to remember when going through security:

  • Be sure that all keys, coins, jewelry, and metal objects are in your carry-on or a security bin.
  • Remove your jacket, shoes, and belt and place them in the security bins.
  • If you have any electronic devices you will want to place them in a separate bin.
  • Any liquids or gels must be in a 3 oz or smaller container, and placed in a plastic bag that is no larger than one-quart, if you do not have one you may get one at the airport.

Denver International Airport has three concourses from which all flights depart: Concourse A, Concourse B, and Concourse C. After passing through security you will head down the escalator to the famous Denver International Airport train which will quickly take you to your concourse.

As you exit your plane, follow the signs to the baggage claim in the main terminal. In most cases, you will need to board the train that runs between concourses to get to the baggage claim.

Art in the Denver Airport

Most people don’t think of artwork when they plan their flights, but DEN practically doubles as an art museum.  As you travel through the airport, take notice of some of the intriguing works that are on display throughout the main terminal and concourses. You may find yourself looking at the one of the many murals, such as  “The Children of the World Dream of Peace,” by Leo Tanguma. Or if you pay attention as you are walking  you may see some Navajo terms for geographical sites inscribed in the floor that reflect Colorado’s ancient past. There is also the awe-inspiring Beaded Circle Crossing located in the B concourse that will make any traveler stop to appreciate it’s beauty.

From the outside, DEN stands out with it’s unique roof, meant to invoke the snow-capped peaks of the Rocky Mountains. In addition to the artistry, the roof is also a feat of engineering, made of teflon fiberglass as as thin as a credit card!

A sculpture of a blue mustang guards the entrance to the airport, with its backstory making for a great read for any traveler waiting to board their flight.
