Jessie UnruhIMG_1068 (8)This January 11th-14th Ullr Fest will be celebrating 54 years and invites all you snow lovers to get out there and help appease the snow god. For those of you unfamiliar with Ullr let me give you a little history lesson. In Norse mythology Ullr (pronounced Oool-er) was the god of winter. He was the son of Sif and stepson of Thor (God of Thunder and…..Ironman’s buddy). Ullr loved the cold weather and would travel by ski’s as he hunted wild game in the Northern Forests.

This year’s Ullr Fest will be full of a variety of events including the Ullr Parade. This year’s parade is expected to have over 12,000 spectators. Taking place on Thursday January 12th the parade will be taking over Main Street in Breckenridge with Vikings and floats!

There will also be a pre-Ullr celebration taking place on Saturday, January 7th. The Ullr Bike presented by Borealis Bikes will take place Saturday afternoon at the Gold Run Nordic Center. With Fat Biking becoming more and more popular this is a great event to show off your racing skills. Last year’s race had 70 competitors and they are hoping for even more this year. Race starts at 1:00PM!

On Wednesday, January 11th there will be even more activities including the Summit Ski Museum’s “Peace, Love, and Skiing” Exhibit from 4:00 – 6:00PM. Everyone will be wearing retro ski gear and celebrating the new and improved Summit County Ski Museum. Later in the day the crowning of the Ullr King and Queen will take place, as well as the annual “Breck’s Got Talent” competition.

IMG_7748-Jessie-Unruh-GoBreck-sThursday is everyone’s favorite day of Ullr Fest. For those of you a little older and looking for bragging rights be sure to sign up for the World’s longest shotski. Last year the shotski had 177 people and was 1,250 feet long! Come on out and help break the record again this year at 4:15pm on Main Street. Registration starts at noon at the Riverwalk Center. Immediately following the shot ski is the Ullr Fest parade down Main Street. This must-see event features local businesses and groups’ parade floats in honor of Ullr. Head over to the Gondola lot after the parade for the incredible Ullr Bonfire until 7pm.

There are plenty of other events including a delicious breakfast, ice skating, a film festival and a polar plunge!
