Try Nordic (cross country) skiing when you visit Summit County this winter!
If you’ve been watching the weather in Colorado, you probably know that a big storm swept through Colorado last week dumping several feet of fresh powder on the Rockies. Those of us in Summit County have been giddy with all this new snow and trying to get out on the slopes at every opportunity. But alpine skiing and snowboarding aren’t the only ways to enjoy the white stuff – Summit County has tons of opportunities for Nordic enthusiasts as well, with multiple dedicated Nordic centers and a host of backcountry trails. If you’re looking to take a break from the crowds or just want a little bit different experience, think about trying cross country skiing on this Summit County vacation.
Here are some of the maintained areas around the county:
Breckenridge Nordic Center
Nestled on Peak 7 above the town of Breckenridge, the Breck Nordic Center offers 30 km of groomed trails including skate-skiing and classic runs. Thanks to the recent storm, they have 95% of their runs open. Select trails are open to skiing with dogs and to self-guided snowshoeing. The Nordic Chalet offers a chance to warm up at the end of the day by the wood burning stoves as well as providing a retail and rental shop and a limited selection of food items.
Gold Run Nordic Center (Breckenridge)
Located at the Breckenridge Golf Course, the Gold Run Nordic Center has 27 km classic and skate ski trails ranging from novice to advanced terrain. Trails are dog friendly, and the center provides a number of other activities including ice skating and horse-drawn sleigh rides. The Clubhouse provides a fireplace to warm up, equipment rentals, a retail shop, a restaurant, and various events throughout the winter.
Keystone Nordic Center
In addition to providing 16 km of classic and skate ski trails, the Keystone Nordic Center is just a couple miles from 57 km of trails in White River National Forest. The Nordic Center also offers a number of specialty programs like Full Moon Tours and Mountain Top Treks. Snow tubing is available on-site, as well as a clubhouse with a daily soup buffet and an outdoor patio for warmer days.
Frisco Nordic Center
32 km of classic and skate ski trails provide terrain from easy to expert on the Frisco Peninsula. Home to the Frisco Adventure Park, the center also offers sleigh rides, snow tubing, and a terrain park. Guided and self-guided snowshoeing is available, as well, including Evening Snowshoe Adventures. Check their event calendar to find out what’s going on while you’re in town.
Copper Cross Country Skiing
Hugging the west side of Copper Mountain Resort are 25 km of trails. While Copper does not have a full service Nordic center, the mountain does not charge for access to the trails, either, making it a great affordable option for those who prefer a no-frills experience.
Planning Ahead
While several shops around the county provide Nordic gear for purchase, if you just want to try out the sport, you can rent directly from the Nordic Centers in Breck, Keystone and Frisco. Lessons are also available for beginners or those looking to take their skiing to the next level.
