There’s much more to Breckenridge than meets the eye. Yes, it has some of the best skiing in the world, rustic lodges with roaring fireplaces, luxury hotels with five-star amenities and activities throughout the winter that people of all ages can enjoy. But it is rich in history and culture, also.

Celebrate the wonder of Breckenridge by visiting and seeing firsthand what makes this a magnet for skiers and snowboarders, but before you come, learn a little bit about the history of Breckenridge by reading up on these fun facts:

    • Some claim that “Breckenridge” was named after President Buchanan’s VP, John Cabell Breckenridge, while others claim the village was named for Thomas E. Breckenridge, a well-known prospector.
  • Many buildings on streets in downtown Breckenridge had fake facades (false fronts) to give them a richer look and to provide advertising space; many of these still exist, so check them out when you visit.
  • In 1880, there were only ten hotels and 18 saloons in Breckenridge; today, there are over 75 restaurants and bars.
  • To keep trains moving through Breckenridge, railway workers used snow plows to blow snow thirty feet away from the tracks, but in the winter of 1898-99, conditions were so harsh that trains did not move for 78 days straight.
  • Breckenridge is where the largest piece of Colorado crystallized gold was found—Tom’s Baby, weighing in at a whopping 13 pounds!
  • This last tidbit will surely show Breckenridge’s growth and popularity over the years: In 1961, 17,000 visitors skied the Breckenridge slopes; in the last couple of years, almost 2 million skiers have visited Breckenridge for winter activities each year.
