The history of snow carving in Breckenridge dates back to the late 1960’s. It began as a local pastime during Ullr Fest, Breckenridge’s annual festival to celebrate the God of Snow. In 1979, the staff at Moore and Co. Real Estate had to decide what new event to enter into Ullr Fest. The choices were between a float for the parade or design a new snow sculpture. After a coin toss the snow sculpture won and the staff formed Team Breck which became the town’s competitive snow sculpting team.
As years passed the sculptures became more intricate and goals for sculptures increased. Team Breck decided to compete in the Colorado State Snow Sculpture Championship, which was also held in Breckenridge. After this Team Breck decided to compete in an international event. In 1991 Team Breck, along with the Town of Breckenridge and Breckenridge Ski Resort, decided to host the International Snow Sculpture Championship and invited competitors from around the globe. The founders of this event are still involved and now the event is attended by more than 34,000 spectators.
This is a must see event and will definitely not disappoint. If you have any other questions about the event or need a ride to Breckenridge for the International Snow Sculpture Championship be sure to give us a call at Peak 1 Express!
