Visitors to the Summit County area often inquire if there are any events that don’t require heart pumping, adrenaline inducing action. To their surprise, the small town of Frisco, CO hosts such an event every June—The Annual Colorado Barbecue Challenge. Dating back to 1993, the BBQ Challenge has gained the interest of both longtime residents and tourists far and near. In fact, last year’s event attracted over 30,000 people. As a Kansas City Barbecue Society (KCBS) sanctioned competition, many notable barbecuers nationwide attend the event in hopes for eligibility in the “World Series” of Barbecue.
This year marks the 23rd challenge and will feature over 70 Barbecues from across the country. Most vendors will offer $1-$2 samples or full plates including sides for $5-$12. After sampling a variety of the best BBQ in the world, attendees can vote for their favorites. Categories include best pork, ribs, chicken, or brisket, best barbecue sauce, best side dish, and even best dessert. After filling their bellies, BBQ enthusiasts can stop and listen to one of the 7 bands, watch the crowd favorite pig races, or participate in the Bacon Burner 6k. Kids will also be catered to with several family friendly activities going on all weekend long. Many non-profit organizations will be raising funds during the challenge so guests can enjoy the event all while helping out a great cause.
This year’s BBQ Challenge will kick off on Thursday, June 16 and continue through Saturday, June 18.
