Dillon & Silverthorne

All About Dillon & Silverthorne

We group these two spots in Summit County together due to the only separation of the two being I-70.  Dillon, originally designed to be a trading post, is on the east side of the interstate.  This town was relocated twice in the first ten years of it’s existence to be closer to the new railways that were being built in the area.  In the mid 1900’s, the reservoir and dam construction was underway which meant residents, again, had to move their homes.  The reservoir now is the water source for many communities on the front range.  Judge Marshall Silverthorn claimed a section of the Blue River in the late 1800’s, which would later be known as the town of Silverthorne.  Many hopeful miners flocked here in the early years but had no luck.

Today, these two towns are some of the only in Summit County with chain restaurants and well-known stores like Lowe’s and Target.  They also are home to many residents due to affordability and location.  Silverthorne and Dillon are situated just moments away from the majority of ski resorts in Summit County; Breckenridge, Arapahoe Basin, Keystone, and Copper Mountain.  Planning to take a week to hit up all the slopes in the county?  Staying in Dillon or Silverthorne would be the smartest way to do it, and you won’t be disappointed.

Great eateries are not scarce in the area.  If you’re on the hunt for a hearty breakfast before your day of adventure, Sunshine Cafe or Arapahoe Cafe & Pub Down Under will suffice.  For the best happy hour deals, check out the Dillon Dam Brewery, Pug Ryan’s Brewery, and Sauce on the Blue.  Head out to The Goat for your nightcap and some live music until closing time.

Silverthorne and Dillon are first moderately sized developed towns you’ll hit while heading west on I-70 from the front range.  With only an hour drive to Denver, heading to the big city for the day is feasible while staying in this area of Summit County.  Their great central location allows you to access all parts of the high country in a timely manner so you can enjoy a taste of every type of Colorado lifestyle while visiting.
