Peak 1 Express VS Rental Car Costs
The Short Answer
Flying Into DIA for a Winter Trip to the Mountains? Take the Shuttle
For 1 to 2 travelers flying into Denver International Airport (DIA), a shuttle is often the easiest and most affordable way to reach Breckenridge and other Colorado mountain resorts. You can save money, avoid winter driving, and skip the added cost of chain rentals for a short mountain trip.
Below, we break down the real costs for three common travel scenarios and explain when renting a car may actually be the better choice.

Things the App Won’t Tell You Before You Request
Rideshare is a great product for a 15-minute ride across town. It’s a different product when the fare is 2 hours one-way in mountain weather. Here’s what changes.
1. Drivers don’t want the trip
A driver who accepts a $278 DIA to Breckenridge fare is committing 4+ hours of their day, including 2 hours to Breckenridge and 2+ hours back, often without a return fare. That math does not work for many drivers, which can lead to declined rides, cancellations after acceptance, or a less-than-ideal experience for passengers.
What you’ll see: “Finding your driver” for 20–40 minutes, then a driver assigned who cancels 3 minutes later, then repeat.
2. Neither Uber nor Lyft requires winter tires
The driver who accepts your fare might be in a Kia Rio with all-season tires. That is legal for the driver, but it is completely out of your control. In a chain-law zone, a $130 CDOT fine goes to the driver, but the four hours you spend on the shoulder waiting for a tow are yours.
What we see every winter: Riders stranded on I-70 when their rideshare driver’s summer-tire sedan can’t make Vail Pass. Our dispatch has taken calls from these exact situations.
3. The return trip is even worse
Requesting an Uber from Breckenridge to DIA on a Sunday morning can mean 40+ minute wait times, assuming drivers are available at all. Most mountain-town drivers stay local within Summit County, so a 2-hour trip to Denver is not an attractive option for many drivers.
Practical reality: Some riders end up paying $400+ for a return Lyft because it’s the only option. Others miss flights waiting for a driver.
When a Rental Car Actually IS the Better Call
We know a shuttle isn’t right for every trip. Here are the four situations where we’d honestly tell you to rent the car.
✴
You want to resort-hop across the state
Skiing Steamboat one day, Aspen the next, Crested Butte the next? A car is genuinely more flexible. Our shuttles serve a defined I-70 corridor; if your itinerary crosses passes we don’t run, a rental is the right tool.
✴
You’re a group of 6+ with tons of gear
At 6+ people, our Private Charter is usually still the better call — but if you’re specifically staying somewhere our shared shuttle doesn’t reach, or making a bunch of side trips, the group SUV rental math can pencil out. Call us and we’ll help you decide.
✴
Your trip is more backcountry than resort
If you’re heading to a backcountry hut trip, a remote hot springs, or hiking off Guanella Pass — you need a vehicle. That’s not our lane, and we won’t pretend it is.
✴
It’s a bluebird July weekend and you want to explore
Summer is when a rental car makes the most sense. Predictable roads, no chain laws, and lots of small towns and trailheads worth wandering to. In winter, the math tips hard the other way.
Why Renting a Car for Your Mountain Getaway Might Not Be the Best Option
When planning your trip to the mountains, you may think renting a car is the easiest way to get around. However, the reality can be quite different. Let’s take a closer look at the costs and challenges that come with renting a car, and why it might not be the most convenient or cost-effective option for your trip. Parking costs add up quickly. Many towns in mountain areas require metered parking, which means paying every time you want to stop and explore. On top of that, hotels and vacation rentals often charge additional parking fees, with rates reaching up to $30 per day or more.
A Smarter, Simpler Solution Starts Here
Rather than dealing with the high costs and inconvenience of a rental car, consider alternative transportation options. By leaving the driving to the experts, you can focus on enjoying your trip without the added worries of parking, gas, or winter road conditions.

Unlike rental cars, which may leave you navigating unfamiliar and potentially hazardous mountain roads, shared shuttles are operated by professional drivers experienced in these conditions. This means you can travel safely and comfortably, even during winter months when road conditions are at their worst. Shuttles also offer ample space for luggage and gear, addressing the limitations of most rental cars.

Frequently Asked Questions
Won’t I regret not having a car for spontaneous stuff?
Genuinely, most people don’t. The town of Breckenridge is walkable end-to-end in 25 minutes, has a free shuttle (Free Ride) connecting all six ski areas, and the lifts are accessible without driving. If a spontaneous side trip does come up, the Free Ride connects to the Summit Stage regional bus for $0. Uber and Lyft also work locally — they just don’t work as your primary DIA connection.
What happens if my flight is delayed?
We track your flight number in real time. If you slide into a later departure window, we automatically move your booking and text you the new departure time. If your flight cancels entirely, we refund or rebook — no penalty, no stress phone call. Rental cars? You call the counter, hope they still have your reservation, and pay whatever late-arrival surcharge applies.
Is the shuttle actually faster than driving myself?
Usually a small difference — 5 to 15 minutes either way in good weather. In bad weather, we’re often faster because our drivers know when to take Loveland Pass, when to wait out Eisenhower, and when to just keep going. That’s local judgment you can’t rent.
Can I combine? Shuttle up, rental down?
Yes, people do this. Take the shuttle up on arrival day so you’re not driving after flying, then rent from Breck if you decide mid-trip you want a car. Enterprise has a Breck location. Just know that in-town rentals cost more per day and have limited winter-package inventory during peak weeks.
What if I’m nervous about being in a van with strangers?
Understandable. Our Door-to-Door Shuttles still share the van but drops each rider at their own lodging, so there’s less shared space. Our Private Charters are a fully private van (up to 14 people) for your group only. In practice, our shared vans are quiet — most people work, sleep, or watch the scenery.
What if I’ve already booked a rental and want to cancel?
Enterprise, Hertz, and most major agencies allow free cancellation up to 24 hours before pickup. If you’re outside that window, sometimes they’ll let it slide if you call and explain. Worst case, you pay a one-day fee to switch — often still cheaper than driving the full week.
