Looking to come out to the mountains for an incredible ski/ snowboard vacation? How about for some of the best hiking and mountain biking in the United States? Denver airport is just 3 hours from Vail Valley. There are many options for transportation. We’re here to break it all down…the pros and cons of getting to the mountains!

Denver Airport Colorado

Rental Car

First, let’s tackle those rental cars! Renting a car has a lot of benefits. It gives you the freedom to go where you want, when you want. You have the flexibility to go visit other parts of Colorado without having to figure out things like bus schedules.

Pick up: Take a shuttle from DIA to the rental car lot to pick up a car. Make sure you get a four-wheel drive car with great snow tires in the winter. We have had record breaking snow fall this winter.

Cost: Prices can range for rental cars, so make sure to book early and shop around little bit. Please keep in mind road conditions and mountain road driving.  Make sure you are comfortable in some adverse conditions before you fully commit to a rental car in the Rockies.

Bustang and Greyhound

The next mode of transportation and definitely the least expensive trip would be Bustang or Greyhound. I know the first thought of taking a bus is that it is long and boring. However, Bustang and Greyhound have both upgraded their buses to now be fully equipped with WIFI, Individual outlets and extra leg room. Say goodbye to the old thought of a stinky bus!

Getting there: These buses pick up from downtown Denver. Don’t worry there is a train that will take you from the airport to union station. From there you can get on the bus and take it into the mountains.

Cost: If you were to go to the Vail Transportation Center the pricing would be about $17.00. The times on the schedules are a little more constrained so make sure you check out their schedule and see what works best for you! Airport Shuttle

The Final option of travel to and from the mountains would be a shuttle service. Imagine being able to enjoy the majestic mountain views and not having to worry about the road because you have an experienced driver taking care of you! There are a few different shuttle services available in Summit County and Vail Valley. They all slightly differ in services areas and vehicle quality. But to throw out some names for you, they are as follows:

  • Peak 1 Express
  • Epic Mountain Express
  • Home James Transportation
  • Black Car Limo Services

They have great options for traveling between Denver International Airport and the mountains. The fleet of vehicles consists of 14 passenger Mercedes Sprinter Vans and private SUVs. They have a shared shuttle service that offers either Door pick up/drop off or a discounted service from one of the transfer stations in the mountains. If you were looking for a more private trip to the mountains, they have a private SUV and private Sprinter service that can be requested per availability.

Pick up: When you take an airport shuttle, they will pick you up curbside at the airport and drop you off at your door. This is such a convenient option.

Cost: The price varies during the time of year but door-to-door shuttles typically start around $60 and the discount station starts about about $40.

No matter what you choose for your travel you will surely have a fantastic trip to the Vail Valley. Make sure to do your research and see what options look best for you!
