Breck Bike Week

Breck Bike Week

Breckenridge isn’t a noteworthy location just because of the slopes that are just within walking distance of Main Street. Where do we have fun when ski season is over? Well… we mountain bike and enjoy other outdoor summer activities! Nothing makes for a better biking territory than a mountain town. As soon as the roads start clearing up on a consistent basis and the frigid winds of winter dissipate, bikers start coming out of the woodworks.

Breck Bike Week is a 5-day long event full of ‘rubber clubbers burnin’ blubber’ from all over Colorado. This year’s bike week falls on June 21-25. Wake up bright n’ early on Wednesday morning to kick off the week with “Bike to Work Day”. Commuters of Breck and Summit County will bike to work alongside other commuters for the day as chippy way to start the day out. After rush hour traffic comes the Summit Mountain Challenge Gold Run Rush which wraps up and completes the first leg of the week.

Thursday gets a little more interesting with 4 events on the day’s schedule. This time people get to sleep in a little more until The “Mayor’s Favorite Lunch Loop”. People will follow alongside the mayor of Breck, Eric Mamula, and ride his favorite mountain bike trail at around noon. The name and location of the loop is a secret until you go. Following the 2 hour ride at lunch is the Yeti Beti’s skills clinic, a skills clinic that is formulated by women, for women. After that, it’s time for happy hour! At this time you can have a drink while you learn from professional mechanics on how to maintain your mountain bike.

The “Firecracker 50 Pre-ride” will start Friday off with a trip on one of Breck’s race loops, guided by the Breck bike guides. Once vendors have their tents set up and ready, the first Bike Expo and Demo will excite the day. From that, comes the Funkadelic Pond Crossing Challenge. A select few people will have the privilege of getting funky on the race track on Dredge pond for a wacky and funkadelic time! Finally, the day once again ends with a bike maintenance workshop to keep those bikes in shape for the week and then on.

On Saturday, people will get another chance at the bike expo and demo, which lasts all day until happy hour. Before that, bikers will go on a guided ride around the Lake Dillon bike loop. This is a 40-mile ride, so there will definitely be more people pushing themselves for time, as a priority rather than seeing sights. Afterwards, Enduro racing will be happening at 10am! This is by far the most popular form of mountain bike racing which can be described as a mostly downhill, cross-country bike race. The Yeti Beti’s workshop will give women another chance at gaining some valuable knowledge which leads into another bike maintenance workshop. To wrap up the day, this time, is a group night ride happening at 6pm! People will roll up Boreas Pass to Baker’s Tank where there will have a fireside dinner and relax before going back down to town.

Sunday marks the last day of Breck Bike Week. Bike enthusiasts will get one last chance to hit the Vendor Expo and then on to the Poker ride (which is the only event for that day, but the fun you will have more than makes up for that). Put on your best poker face and pedal around to each of the cardholder destinations. You will grab one card from each point and use your best hand for a chance to win a prize!

Sometimes people aren’t ready for the fun at Breck Bike week to be over. To make up for it, people usually plan to engage in at least one other summer sport. If you’re looking for a scenic ride and want to give other parts of Colorado a try, then you should try out whitewater rafting with AVA! You are sure to get the Rocky Mountain experience that you didn’t know you were looking for!
