Colorado is home to a large population of aspen trees that will begin to turn colors right around the middle of September. Vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows will blanket the hills, valleys, and even the sides of mountains in the high country. Depending on where you are in the state, there are different times to catch the changing aspens due to climate change and elevation. For instance, if one is seeking the picturesque moment where the vibrant gold has a mountainous backdrop at 10,000 feet, the middle of September is the best time to visit. But if one is in Denver (sitting at an elevation of 5,280 ft.) in early October, the leaves will just be starting to change. The fall foliage in the mountains doesn’t last long, so catch it while you can. A heavy rain fall or even an early season snow storm will leave the aspens bare and chilly.

Here are some amazing drives that will provide beautiful views of the changing aspens and mountain regions:

  • Peak to Peak Scenic and Historic Byway: A must see during any season in Colorado, the Peak to Peak Scenic and Historic Byway offers a 55 mile stretch of unmatched natural beauty. • Guanella Pass Scenic Byway: On the south side of Interstate 70, opposite of the Peak to Peak Scenic Byway, sits Guanella Pass and another amazing drive through the mountains of Colorado.
