Colorado is known known for our wonderful ski towns but have you ever heard of the small tucked away in the mountains ski town Breckenridge? This Historic town was founded in 1859 by General George E. Breckinridge, if you are not familiar with him, he was our 14th Vice President. General George did this in hopes on gaining a post office for the town. His plan went as followed, Breckenridge had the first post office!
Then, when the Civil War started in 1861 our former Vice President Breckinridge sided with the confederates. With all the pro union citizens in the town Breckenridge being outraged they united and changed the name from Breckinridge with an “i” to Breckenridge with an “e”. The year 1961 was a big year for the town because in December the ski area also opened!
Don’t be fooled by the size of Breckenridge, this little town was a filming location for the 1989 movie National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation and the movie Dumb and Dumber. This town is a hot spot for vacationers and for locals looking for to live in the mountains. The population of Breckenridge in 2010 was about 4,540 but has definitely grown in the past few years. The town is filled with local residents but the population fluctuates based on tourist seasons. Lots of people vacation in the summer and winters in Breckenridge and help keep the town financially stable.
Breckenridge is also worldwide known for skiers and snowboarders. However, Breckenridge has a lot more to offer than just skiing and snowboarding. There are tons of activities here including hiking, biking, rafting, kayaking and so much more.
