The drive from Denver International Airport to the mountain resorts like Breckenridge or Vail can be tiresome. With delays, traffic, and bad weather , the simple two hour drive can feel like torture. To make the drive a little more relaxing we like to stop along the way, after all there is tons to explore in Colorado. Below you will find three of our favorite areas to stop in while making our way up the mountains.

Boulder, Colorado

Located at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains and home to the striking Flatirons, Boulder is a town that truly has it all. Centered around the University and Pearl Street, Boulder is home to tons of great shopping and dining options. With the streets coming alive in the summer with countless street performers and festive lights in the winter, Pearl Street is an sight to see no matter the season.

Black Hawk, Colorado

The infamous Black Hawk and Central City are most well known for its casino and gambling presence. Originally an old mining town that died out at the end of gold and silver rush, the town was revived once the casino opened up. Additionally, what makes this area so famous was its 2010 ban on bike riding in town, which was overturned in 2013. If traveling up for a bachelor/bachelorette party, Black Hawk is must stop for some added fun.

Idaho Springs, Colorado

Idaho Springs, essentially the gateway into the mountains, was home to the first gold rush in 1859. Centered around a quaint Main Street, filled with history and charm, Idaho Springs has tons to see. Additionally, Idaho Springs is home to one of the larger 14ers, Mt. Evans, and several other great hiking and 4×4 trails.

Driving to and from the mountains is not always the best. While it is very scenic, weather and traffic conditions can often make this beautiful drive into a long un-welcomed trek. However, if you break up your drive to the mountains with one of 3 favorite stops or riding with your local mountain shuttle,  the drive will be a little more enjoyable.
